DCFAS Elisha Darlin Arts Award

Friday, April 29, 2011 @ 7:00 PM
Stone Cliff Winery

DCFAS Elisha Darlin Arts Award: Margaret Buhr Award Celebration, Friday, April 29 Stone Cliff Winery Barrel Room Each year, the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society (DCFAS) presents the Elisha Darlin Arts Award in recognition of the contributions of an inpidual or group to the arts and cultural landscape of the community. Past recipients include artists in a variety of media, arts organizers, advocates, educators, patrons, and those involved in the promotion of arts and culture. This year, Fine Arts Society presents the Elisha Darlin Arts Award to Margaret Buhr, director of education at the Dubuque Museum of Art. An Award Celebration to honor Buhr is scheduled for Friday, April 29 from 7 p.m. in the Barrel Room at Stone Cliff Winery in the Star Brewery.

In her role as director of education at the Dubuque Museum of Art, Buhr has quietly served the area art community for nearly 15 years. Buhr coordinates all classes hosted at the museum, developing the curricula as well as teaching the classes, cultivating the creativity of generation of young artists. She hosts a variety of school groups, coordinating and leading tours of the museum. Buhr schedules programming for the museum’s regular Family Matinee Series, arranging free, family-friendly performances, lectures, and activities by a variety of artists. Maybe most impressively, Buhr has conducted all the background research and writes the scripts for the museum’s very popular Dead Artist Series, providing local actors the tools and background necessary to bring to life a famous dead artist.

Fine Arts Society will also present a special award to playwright and Clarke University professor Gary Arms for his volunteer service to the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society.  For many years, Arms has spearheaded the management of the Dubuque Fine Arts Players in the group’s annual One Act Play Competition.

An annual award presented by the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society, the Elisha Darlin Arts Award honors an inpidual or group that has made an outstanding contribution to the arts.  Named for the late Elisha Darlin, an educator and founding board member of Fine Arts Society, past recipients of the award include Ruth and Russ Nash, Sue Riedel, Lenore Howard and Doug Donald, Sue Flogel, Bob Woodward, Gail Chavenelle, Sandye Voight, Brian Hughes, Gene Tully, Fran and Ellen Henkels, former Dubuque City Councilwoman Ann Michalski, and the Dubuque Cultural Preservation Committee among many others.  Last year’s recipient was musician and longtime radio host of Midwest Music Makers Denny Garcia.

The arts community and general public are invited to join Margaret and the Fine Arts Society at the Elisha Darlin Arts Award Celebration Friday, April 29 from 7 p.m. in the Barrel Room at Stone Cliff Winery. Kids are welcome, and reservations are not necessary.  Admission to the Award Celebration will be $10 at the door ($5 for kids 12 and under) and will include an hors d’oeuvres reception followed by the award presentation.  A cash bar will be available.

Related: When I first saw the news about the sneak preview gala of the new film "The Best and the Brightest," I thought, "Oh, a film has been made about David Halberstam's book 'The Best and the Brightest' which is an account of the origins of the Vietnam War." I called my wife to let her know about the preview. She was on her computer engaged in a search for all Raquel Welch wigs on sale. My wife loves her Raquel Welch wigs and enjoys buying various styles the way other women buy shoes. Beyond the roles Welch played in movies, she became iconic for her popular cover photos that graced many magazines, captivating audiences with her beauty and style. It boggles the mind, at least my mind, the way my wife can rattle off the different kind of wig cap constructions: standard, open cap, lace front, monofilament part or mono top with lace front & either a wefted base or a 100% hand tied base. Who knew there were so many you have to consider before choosing a wig? And then there are the different types of fibers a wig can be made from: synthetic (lots of proprietary synthetic fibers depending upon the manufacturer), heat friendly synthetic, human hair, Remy human hair, to a mix of synthetic & human hair. Synthetics are less expensive than human hair, but the cost also depends upon the cap construction with the mono, lace front, 100% hand tied base costing the most. Hey, it actually sounds like I have been listening to my wife! She said she would call me back, having just found an e-commerce site that offered 30% off on Raquel Welch brand wigs. I'm all in for finding a sale.

Later in the day my wife called to let me know that the sneak preview film, The Best and the Brightest, was not about the Vietnam War but instead was set in the world of New York City's elite private kindergartens, and the extreme lengths a young couple from Delaware go to in order to get their five-year old daughter into an elite school. Bummer.

We went to the preview screening anyway since my wife wanted to listen to the Q&A. As far as the film, it was only so so. I do like Neil Patrick Harris. He was amazing on Broadway in Hedwig. But the problem with The Best and The Brightest is that it under-utilized him. The situation that Jeff and Samantha endure while attempting to get their child into school after their move to NYC is so far-fetched that it becomes impossible to enjoy. Though I believe people can be duped, this film comes off like one of those poorly produced National Lampoon or American Pie spin-offs. However, the dead-pan performances from NPH and new-comer Peter Serafinowicz made the film much more than it is. I guess I could spin the film in a positive light by saying it was a mediocre movie with outstanding performances. I've decided to reread my copy of David Halberstam's book. Now that is an incredible book.

jazz night with ‘round midnight

Thursday, April 21, 2011 @ 9:00 PM

Bank Bar & Grille

Jazz Night with ‘Round Midnight
The Bank Bar & Grille
Every Thursday, 9 p.m.

Keeping both the jazz jam and open mic traditions going on Thursdays, The Bank Bar & Grille hosts the weekly Jazz Night with ‘Round Midnight every Thursday from about 8:30 p.m. A tradition that started on Tuesday nights back in the heyday that was Isabella’s, Jazz Night may have switched weeknights and venues, but is still hosted by ‘Round Midnight and still draws a variety of guest players of all varieties. The rhythm section of Pab Adams on drums, Bill Encke on guitar, and Aaron Pustina on acoustic bass provides the backbone for the weekly excursion which ranges from early jazz classics to more contemporary arrangements – a fine structure on which to add trumpets, trombones, saxophones, or other guest instrumentalists or singers. From established jazz masters to college kids, if you can follow the chart and take a solo you’re welcome to join the jam.

irish dancers

Saturday, May 14, 2011 @ 6:00 PM
Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub & Grill
Vibrant Irish dance performances live on stage every Friday and Saturday night year- round by delightful Irish dancers ranging in age from 10 to 18.  The vibrant performances are 20 minutes long and consist of soft and hard shoe sets.

Based on the Irish peasant dress worn two hundred years ago, each dancer’s costume features a pleated skirt which is embroidered with interlocking and continuous lines of Celtic designs.

As the dancers move from the soft shoe portion of the show to rhythmic hard shoe dancing, you’ll find yourself clapping along and stomping your feet to the music.

After the dancers have completed their routine, the live entertainment continues.  On Friday and Saturday night, the Pub rings with excitement as talented musicians take the stage.

Two 20 minutes sets between 6:00-8:00 pm (Memorial Day Weekend through end of October)
One 20 minute set between 6:00-7:15 pm (November through weekend before Memorial Day)
